However, despite the information contained in the documents collected in the computerized system, since the documents originally remained raw material within Yad Vashem's internal system and were not available to the public, including to the academic community, their usefulness was limited.
However, since the sources were of different types or genres, the perspectives on events presented in the documentation were varied, and the details provided differed, the information in the documents offered an opportunity for establishing an on-line research project that would focus on the murder sites of Jews and the places where they had resided.

The team' s project to create an on-line site "The Untold Stories" included murder sites of Jews who had resided in middle-sized and small settlements in Nazi-occupied parts of the USSR -- from the Baltic republics (mainly Lithuania and Latvia) in the North through Belorussia and Russia in the center to Ukraine in the South.
Subsequent work on the on-line project has added several dozen murder sites.
Due to the nature of the internet medium, murder sites were selected for inclusion on the basis of several criteria: variety in terms of location, variety of the types of sources, and the availability of visual material. To date (late 2011) the Yad Vashem database of murder sites and mass murder of Jews in the FSU has recorded 2151 murder sites and 2570 cases of mass murder.Every listing includes the following information: the precise name of the murder site, its administrative affiliation (country, county, and district), geographical location (latitude and longitude), the dates of the events, the ethnic (Jewish) identity of the victims, the number of victims, the group identity of the perpetrators of the murders (and sometimes the officers or officials in command), brief information on the murders, including how they were carried out, and the source (bibliographical or archival) of the material.Previously the sources of this information had been either considered of marginal interest or totally ignored.A team was established at Yad Vashem's International Institute for Holocaust Research to enter the material that was collected at Yad Vashem into a computerized data-base.
